The recently enacted Arizona statute requires law enforcement officials to question individuals if there is "reasonable suspicion" to believe that the individual is an illegal immigrant. The law, enacted to reduce illegal immigration, has been criticized for promoting racial discrimination against Hispanics. Despite widespread criticism, a recent non-partisan poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that 51 percent of the survey's respondents support Arizona's recently enacted immigration law. In addition, 48 percent of voters said that they want a similar immigration law enacted in their state. Surprisingly, three-quarters of all voters objected to plans to boycott Arizona based on the law being enacted.
Indiana State Senator Mike Delph has spoken out about his support for an Arizona like immigration enforcement law in Indiana and hopes to get Senate Bill No. 213 passed in Indiana this session. He has sponsored immigration legislation in the past.
